TECHNICAL NOTES; V8 Engine Mounting Suggestions for Modified Cars Small Block: If engine is in car now with stock front motor mounts and you do not wish to remove it, the easiest is to leave stock front mounts & use #’s 10-110, 10-111A with 10-156 or 10-111B, & 10-216, regardless of which late model auto trans you are using. If you have an original 283 or 265 block you will need to use #21-START (see Generator Starter Section, Group 21D) to mount starter. For stick cars the easiest is to use an original bell housing (or a Scatter Shield made for a 55-7) with stock rear mounts (10-116, 10-117) plus10-216, 10-111A with 10-156 or 10- 111B, if you are using a cast iron 4 speed or any 5, 6 speed trans. Using the stock bell housing will allow you to use original clutch linkage. If you are starting from scratch (& are Not using an original 55-7 block that do NOT have side mount bosses) the best way is #10-185 side mounts with #’s 10-186A, 10-186C, 10-111A with 10-156 or 10-111B, 10-216, 10-216A. You do not need to use 1” forward mounts to use an HEI distributor. If crossmember 10-111A or 10-111B is mounted as high as possible (trans rear mainshaft center should be 1 ¼ above top of frame rails) you should have plenty of clearance for distributor unless Body is mounted all the way forward on frame (Yes, that is adjustable. Loosen body bolts & slide body back.) If you plan to have an updated power steering pump it is suggested that you mount your radiator in the 6-cyl position. If you use the V8 position you will have very little choice for engine fans. Big Block: #10-185A is a front mount setup that puts engine in ‘stock’ location and requires modifying firewall to get valve cover clearance. Use this setup with #’s 10-110, 10-111A with 10-156 or 10-111B, & 10-216, 10-216A for auto trans applications, for stick cars use an original bell housing (or a Scatter Shield made for a 55-7) with stock rear mounts (10-116, 10-117) plus 10-111A with 10-156 or 10-111B, & 10-216, 10-216A. Using the stock bell housing will allow you to use original clutch linkage. If you wish to use side mounts you can use 10-185 mounts with #’s 10-186A, 10-186C, 10-111A with 10-156 or 10-111B, & 10-216, 10-216A. This also requires modifying firewall to get valve cover clearance, which is the best way to do it. Using 1” forward mounts creates many problems in solving the firewall problem such as drive shaft, headers, clutch linkage, oil pan, handling, etc. We do not sell these as we feel they create many more problems than they solve. See our web site for basics on the firewall mods required
10-185 SIDE MOTOR MOUNT BRACKETS, bolt on brackets to change from stock mounting to later model side mounting of V8 engines, comes with all necessary hardware & instructions, (we suggest you use 10-111A with 10-156 Crossmember Mounting Kit or 10-111B Crossmember kit, &10-216 Rear Mount Cushion, & 2 10-186A Side Mount Cushion, to complete your engine & transmission mounting) USA made, will not interfere with fuel line.
Note: We Do Not Sell 1" forward side motor mounts. We recommend that you use 10-185. We have found that using these 1" forward mounts create more problems than they solve. These are too numerous to list here. Bigblocks; just modify your firewall as necessary and you will save yourself a lot of work and aggravation. In the case of a smallblock there is no good reason to move it forward. If rear engine height and body location on the frame is correct GM HEI distributor will fit most without modifying anything. You need 3 1/4" from rotor center to firewall to fit.
